The Quarter Century Amateur Radio Club took over operation of the VE6SS amateur repeater in October 1987. VE6SS started operation on April 28, 1975. The Amateur Radio League of Alberta built VE6SS and operated it until they turned it over to QCARC to operate in 1987. The location of 'SS' is the southeast end of Pigeon Lake on the new TransAlta site. Since QCARC has operated VE6SS, it was necessary to relocate it from the original TransAlta site to their new site a half mile south.
VE6SS provides a large coverage area which includes highway 2 from Red Deer to Morinville and along highway 16 from Elk Island to Lake Wabamun.
